BUILD TAURANGA - August 2010

Issue 4, August 2010

BAY INSPECTIONS TO JOIN TAURANGA CITY COUNCIL

Tauranga City Council is bringing the building code compliance unit in-house. Council has purchased the assets of Bay Inspections but will continue to run the plan processing and inspection service from their Park Street office. All personnel and contact phone numbers will remain the same so as customers you will notice no change in the level of service currently provided.

BUILDING ACTIVITY

50 new dwelling consents issued in July 2010, compared to 36 in July 2009
Total of 224 building consents issued during July 2010, compared to 197 for the same period last year.

BUILDING ACT CHANGES

News from Wellington, the Minister of Building Maurice Williamson announced further changes to the Building Act to be implemented over the next two years. You can view his press release on the Department of Building and Housing website.

Some of the more significant changes are that a written contract between building contractors and consumers will be required for all projects above $20,000, together with more information disclosures, clearer obligations and new legal remedies. The Government is also proposing to exempt a broader range of building work from needing a building consent by adding to Schedule 1 of the Building Act. The date for these changes is proposed to be later in 2010.

CHECKLIST

A checklist is attached to the newsletter for anyone proposing to lodge a building consent for new building work where the final Section 224 certificate has not been issued for subdivision. The checklist has a list of required information that must accompany the building consent application before Council will accept it. If you have any queries about the checklist please contact Rob Wickman or Steve Hurley on 577 7215.

INDUSTRY MEETING

We had another quarterly catch-up with industry representatives at the Council offices last week—thank you to all who attended. These meetings are a useful way for us to hear about any issues you are having that we can help to resolve. The next meeting will be held in November.
