What is the City Partnership Programme?

The City Partnership Programme is a relationship-based programme where the Council and city stakeholders work together collaboratively to get things done for the benefit of the community.

Essentially, a formal long-term relationship is established between Council and a partner organisation (City Partner). Each City Partner agrees to make an ongoing investment in the community.  The programme then prioritises projects that need assistance and matches City Partners with projects they most want to be associated with.

The City Partners generally provide goods, services, cash and loans, or a mix of these.  They get involved because they want to be part of Tauranga City’s future and it makes good business sense to do so.

City Partnership Programme

There are three levels of involvement:

  • Project Partners
  • City Partners
  • Principal City Partners

Most, but not all, agreements are for a period of five years.

Support for Acorn

The City Partnership Programme also supports the Acorn Foundation which is a charitable trust created to encourage people to establish their own named endowment fund to provide long term benefits to the community.

What do City Partners get in return?

Each City Partner generally gets:

  • opportunities to build a better relationship with Council, City Partners and the community
  • public acknowledgement and recognition for the support provided to the programme
  • direct project association
  • networking and training opportunities

It is important to kill two myths at this point.

  • The City Partners cannot partner with the Council and then get special favours on contracts that the Council tenders.

  • The City Partners are not contributing money that would otherwise have gone to voluntary organisations and other causes.
