Voting systems

Council currently operates its elections under the first past the post (FPP) electoral system. For the 2019 and 2022 Tauranga City Council elections, we will be using the Single Transferable Voting (STV) system.

For the 2019 and 2022 Tauranga City Council elections, we will be using the Single Transferable Voting (STV) system. This replaces the traditional First Past the Post (FPP) system.

STV allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference. Under the FPP system, each person has one vote for his or her preferred candidate for each vacancy.

First Past the Post (FPP)

Single Transferable Voting (STV)

The Local Electoral Act 2001 allows local authorities to change their voting system; however, five percent of enrolled Tauranga voters (4,532, which is 5% of 90,628) can demand a binding poll to stay with FPP and not make the change to STV by Wednesday, 21 February 2018.
