We are proposing some upgrades to Cheyne Park, Pyes Pa to give much improved access from Montana Drive. We’d like to inform you about these changes and provide an opportunity to give any feedback.
Cheyne Park is a neighbourhood reserve that is not well used because it is hard to access. We are planning to upgrade the accessway to the park – by removing the building at 12 Montana Drive to give it a wide entrance that makes the park more visible and accessible from the street. This, combined with landscaping will help the area become a more attractive, user-friendly and safer community reserve for the residents in this area.
We’ll also add some new features, like park benches and native trees, plus refurbish some of the existing playground equipment.
Council established that purchasing a property was the best way to improve access in this particular case. In 2017 the property at 12 Montana Drive was listed for sale and Council purchased this property to enable us to create an additional entry into the park.
This work is being funded through existing development contributions, which are used to help improve parks and reserves for the local community. There are specific conditions about how Council is able to use these development contributions to improve parks and reserves around Tauranga. Funding for this work has been approved by Council’s Elected Members.
The building at 12 Montana Drive will be removed and we will be selling or salvaging/recycling as much of the building as possible through this process. Once it has been removed, the grounds will be reinstated, with footpaths and signage. A concept of what this might look like is provided below.

We have a small budget for other improvements beyond opening up the access to Cheyne Park and if you have any ideas for other minor improvements you can submit them below.
We have informed nearby neighbours about our proposal to do these upgrades at Cheyne Park, Pyes Pa and we would like to hear from other residents about this proposal.
