People in Tauranga are asked to remain indoors as Tauranga City Council surveys the damage after today’s severe weather, and prepares for a second king tide later this evening.
High tides, combined with strong winds, flooded some low-lying parts of Tauranga this morning. With high tide expected again at 11pm, Bay of Plenty Civil Defence is advising that people consider self-evacuating if they were adversely affected earlier today.
If you need to travel, avoid city parks and walkways as there may be damaged tracks and fallen trees.
If you spot surface flooding, or blocked/damaged roads and walkways, please phone the Council on 07 577 7000 – even if it doesn’t seem urgent.
More information:
- Several coastal/harbour parks, reserves and walkways will remain closed until at least tomorrow morning
- Caution is advised around all coastal or harbour walkways this weekend as not all damage will have been reported and assessed
- There is significant tree damage city-wide, so please be cautious when out and about this weekend.
