Road closures - 23 December 2021

City centre road works pause over the Christmas and New Year holiday period

As many construction sites shut down across Tauranga for the holidays, roads will be cleared as much as possible of signage and cones leaving the city centre for residents and visitors to enjoy.
No new road works will start in the city centre, under or above ground, between Monday 20 December and Wednesday 5 January, 2022.

  • Works on Cameron Road will pause from Friday 24 December to Wednesday 5 January, with temporary traffic management reduced to allow two lanes of traffic in both directions, where possible. The temporary traffic management will be reinstated from Wednesday 5 January, 2022.
  • Streetscape upgrades on Elizabeth Street will cease between Wednesday 22 December and Monday 10 January, and Elizabeth Street will be restored to two lanes for this period. The lane closure will be reinstated from mid-January, to enable fitout activities on the 38 Elizabeth site.

Works to pick up from early January

January will be a busy month for roadworks, with simultaneous lane closures on Takitimu Drive and Cameron Road.

The Cameron Road Joint Venture returns to work from Wednesday 5 January, 2022 and will be starting a new section of works between First and Third Avenues, which will result in the closure of the northbound lanes. During this period, northbound traffic will be diverted onto the other side of the road, with a single lane operating in each direction. There will also be lane closures on First, Second and Third Avenues. Find out more at Cameron Road.

Also, on Wednesday 5 January, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency will begin major maintenance work on Takitimu Drive (SH2) under the Waihi Road/Eleventh Avenue overbridge. This work is to address important maintenance and drainage issues, and will involve closing a 500-metre section of the highway down to two lanes. Waka Kotahi expects this work to be completed by 28 January 2022, weather permitting.

If you’re coming into the city in January, make sure you check the current road closures, so you can navigate easily through the city centre.

Repairs to SH2 Takitimu Drive (under the Waihi Road/Eleventh Avenue overbridge) by Waka Kotahi

People who travel along State Highway 2 Takitimu Drive regularly will know there are a few bumps under the Waihi Road / 11th Avenue overbridge, near Judea. Starting Wednesday 5 January 2022 Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency are going to rebuild this section. The works involve removing a considerable amount of the road and filling it with new material and replacing with structural asphalt, as well as upgrading the drainage.

To do the rebuild work, they need to close the 500-metre section down to two lanes. This will add time to people's holiday travel plans, especially those people wanting to get to and from the beach. And the alternative routes will both have significant worksites active from 10 January; a weekend closure of SH2 at Bay Link from Saturday 15 to 5.30am Monday 17 January, as well as the worksites along Cameron Road. The aim is to have the work completed by Auckland Anniversary weekend, weather permitting.

Kulim Park

The new playground and parking areas at Kulim Park is open to the public from Thursday 23 December.

Our contractors have been working tirelessly to complete the park improvements before Christmas but due to delays in material supplies and some very wet weather we won’t be able to finish everything this year.

We’ll have to come back in January to finish sections of the shared pathway and finishing touches. The gardens will be planted when the dry season is over later in the new year.

The park will be fully completed and an opening day held in February. Find out more on our website.
