Cycleways

We want to build a 12km network of cycleways for all ages and abilities.

There are a variety of options for providing cycleways.

One-way cycleway

Cycleway in the same direction as adjacent traffic usually on each side of the road

One-way cycleway

Two-way cycleway

Cycleway in both directions for cycling accommodated within one facility on one side of the road

Two-way cycleway

Shared path

A path that is intended to be used by pedestrians, cyclists, and people who use mobility devices

There are five sections of the cycling route.

Section 1 of the cycling route

From Cameron Road at Harington Street along Cameron Road and Chapel Street to the intersection of Ngatai Road with Vale Street. There are three cycling options for this section.

Option A: shared path both sides

  • footpath widening (behind trees on Cameron Road) to create shared path
  • parking between Harington and McLean Streets changed to parallel parks, with reduction in spaces likely
  • on-road cycle lanes on Cameron Road retained, cycle lanes between Brown Street and Maxwells Road changed to shared path
  • path widening required into estuary, from Mobil petrol station to Chapel Street bridge, and from bridge to Maxwells Road.

Chapel Street to Harington Street option A

Section 1: Option A map (1.4mb pdf)

Option B: one-way cycleways both sides

  • parking between Harington and Brown Streets changed to parallel parks, some reduction in spaces likely
  • minor road widening
  • traffic signals at Maxwells Road (T-intersection)
  • removes one northbound traffic lane between Brown Street and Vale Street

Chapel Street to Harington Street option B

Section 1: Option B map (1.4mb pdf)

Option C: two-way cycleway east side

  • parking on west side unchanged
  • parking on east side between Harington and Brown Streets changed to parallel parks, with some reduction in spaces likely
  • road widening between Harington to Marsh Streets
  • removal of street trees east side of Cameron Road
  • removes one northbound traffic lane between Brown Street and Vale Street.

Chapel Street to Harington Street option C

Section 1: Option C map (1.4mb pdf)

Section 2 of the cycling route

From Chapel Street, along Ngatai Road to the intersection with Ōtūmoetai Road. There are three cycling options for this section.

Option A: one-way cycleways both sides

  • parking retained on one side; parking removed on the other side
  • extensive road widening throughout
  • overhead power lines moved underground (high cost)
  • closure of Vale Street and Ngatai Road slip lanes
  • traffic signals at Vale Street intersection (all turns available).

Ngatai Road to Chapel Street option A

Option B: one-way cycleways both sides

  • parking removed on both sides
  • no road widening
  • closure of Vale Street and Ngatai Road slip lanes
  • traffic signals at Vale Street intersection (all turns available).

Ngatai Road to Chapel Street option B

Option C: two-way cycleway on north side

  • parking retained on south side; parking removed on north side
  • minimal road widening
  • relocation of Vale Street and Ngatai Road slip lanes
  • traffic signals at Vale Street intersection (all turns available).

Ngatai Road to Chapel Street option C

Section 3 of the cycling route

From Ngatai Road (near the Matua Saltmarsh entrance) along Windsor Road to Bellevue Road. There are four cycling options for this section.

Option A: two-way cycleway on east side, one-way traffic

  • one-way traffic on Charles Street and Windsor Road between Ngatai and Anne Roads
  • parking retained on both sides of the road through the one-way section
  • parking on the west side, south of Anne Road
  • minimal road widening required.

Ngatai Road to Bellevue Road option A

Section 3: Option A map (1.3mb pdf)

Option B: two-way cycleway on east side, two-way traffic

  • two-way traffic flow retained
  • North of Anne St: parking on the east side of the road only
  • South of Anne St: parking on the west side of the road only
  • moderate road widening required.

Ngatai Road to Bellevue Road option B

Option C: one-way cycleways on both sides (two-way cycleway on east side of Ngatai Road)

  • two-way traffic flow retained
  • parking only on the east side of the road, reducing the number of spaces for visibility reasons where the cycleway crosses driveways
  • changes to parking outside the local shops, with some reduction in parking spaces likely
  • significant road widening required.

Ngatai Road to Bellevue Road option C

Option D: two-way cycleway on west side

  • two-way traffic flow retained
  • parking only on the east side of the road
  • changes to parking outside the local shops, with some reduction in parking spaces likely
  • minimal road widening required

Ngatai Road to Bellevue Road option D

Section 4 of the cycling route

From Windsor Road along Bellevue Road to Waihi Road. There are three cycling options for this section.

Option A: one-way cycleways on both sides

North of Brookfield roundabout:

  • no parking
  • moderate road widening around intersections.

Brookfield roundabout:

  • shared paths at the roundabout with path widening and improved crossings
  • a shared path is created past the front of the shops opposite Millers Road by converting the adjacent carparks to parallel parks, reduced parking spaces

South of Brookfield roundabout:

  • significant road widening required

Windsor Road to Bellevue Road option A

Section 4: Option A map (1.5mb pdf)

Option B: two-way cycleway on west side

North of Brookfield roundabout:

  • parking only on the east side of the road
  • moderate road widening around intersections

Brookfield roundabout:

  • the route runs through Lees Park with a widened shared path and improved crossing over Ōtūmoetai Road
  • other paths are widened
  • the Millers Road crossing is improved

South of Brookfield roundabout:

  • significant road widening required.

Windsor Road to Bellevue Road option B

Option C: combination

North of Brookfield roundabout:

  • two-way cycleway on the west side of the road
  • parking only on the east side of the road
  • moderate road widening around intersections.

Brookfield roundabout:

  • a shared path around the south of the roundabout, with path widening and improved crossings.

South of Brookfield roundabout:

  • one-way cycleways on both sides of the road
  • significant road widening required

Windsor Road to Bellevue Road option C

Section 5 of the cycling route

From Bellevue Road along Waihi Road onto Eleventh Avenue up to Cameron Road. There are four cycling options for this section.

Option A – one-way cycleways, shared path on both sides

  • changes to parking outside the Waihi Road local shops (near Paine Street), with some reduction in parking likely
  • reduction in parking on Eleventh Avenue
  • painted flush median on Waihi Road, moderate road widening to provide spaces for vehicles to turn.

Waihi Road to Eleventh Avenue option A

Section 5: Option A map (1.3mb pdf)

Option B – one-way cycleways, shared path on both sides

  • changes to parking outside the Waihi Road local shops (near Paine Street), with some reduction in parking spaces likely
  • reduction in parking on Eleventh Avenue
  • Raised centre island on Waihi Road restricts all right turns; new roundabouts for access
  • moderate road widening required.

Waihi Road to Eleventh Avenue option B

Option C – two-way cycleway, shared path on south side

  • two crossing points with signals required on Bellevue and Waihi Roads 
  • changes to parking outside the Waihi Road local shops (near Paine Street), with some reduction in parking spaces likely
  • moderate road widening.

Option D – combination

West of Churchill Road:

  • one-way cycleways on both sides
  • changes to parking outside the Waihi Road local shops (near Paine Street), with some reduction in parking spaces likely
  • moderate road widening required.
  • East of Churchill Road:
  • two-way cycleway and sections shared path on south side of the road
  • moderate road widening required.

Waihi Road to Eleventh Avenue option D
