We want to know what you think about a proposal to sell Council-owned land at Parau Farms, Bethlehem for a housing development.
What we’re proposing
We own a large site (approximately 22 hectares) in Bethlehem on the southern side of State Highway 2 located between the Te Paeroa roundabout and Wairoa River, known as Parau Farms. We bought this land in 2000 for future use as sports fields, but Tauranga has changed since then. Given the extreme housing shortage in Tauranga, we now propose that this land be sold for housing. Tucked in behind the Bethlehem Town Centre, the land is ideally placed to provide much needed homes for Tauranga residents. It’s close to shops, schools and other amenities, including public transport.
We also own 11 hectares of land next to the Parau Farms site which is not part of this proposed sale for housing development. We’re looking into whether this land would be suitable for sports fields.
We’re also investigating alternative sites for sports fields in the west of the city.
We’re at the beginning of a long process, with many steps to go through before any homes would be built on the site, if the land is sold. The first step is for you to tell us what you think about this proposal. No decision will be made regarding the proposal to sell the land until February 2022, after we’ve received and considered your feedback.
