Hartford Avenue Reserve

Hartford Avenue Reserve is a public reserve with a children’s playground which is reaching the end of its life and needs to be replaced.

This has provided an opportunity to deliver a fit-for-purpose new playground that meets the needs of this local community.

A proposal for a low impact pump track was consulted on with local residents in February 2019, and the feedback was generally positive.

Council identified the opportunity to combine both the pump track construction with an upgrade to the playground. In June 2019 we contacted the local residents and met with key users of the playground such as the adjacent preschool and Tahatai Coast School to discuss what they would like to see in in the playground upgrade. In November we held an Ideas Day to get community feedback on designs.

Preferred playground design

We have used community feedback to create a final playground design – this was preferred by 72% of attendees to our Ideas Day where designs were voted on. We’d like to thank Tahatai Coast Primary School students as well as the community for their ideas they gave towards this playground upgrade.

Playground design

The playground inspired by the Legend of Mangatawa ‘Three Whales’

A colour scheme from the ocean/harbour and hills is also used throughout with splashes of more vivid colour. Equipment includes:

  • Tower and slide
  • Whale rocker
  • Carousel
  • See saw
  • A play area for toddlers
  • Congo drums
  • Swings

Please see below a sketch of the final design:
