City centre temporary speed limit

The speed limit in the Tauranga central city is 30km/h.

The new speed limit came into effect on Monday, 29 October 2018. It applies between First Avenue and McLean Street, and between Cameron Road and the waterfront. Cameron Road will remain at 50km/h.

There are lots of busy construction projects underway in the city centre that require a 30km/h temporary speed limit. We have changed to one consistent speed limit for the whole city centre to keep things simple for people who are driving and safer for people who are walking and biking.

The trial has been approved under the code of practice for temporary traffic management. If the change is to be made permanent, there will be a formal consultation process. A permanent 30kmph speed limit has been successful in Mount Maunganui.
