Using less in the laundry

Up to a quarter of a household’s water is used in the laundry and hundreds of litres can be washed down the drain every day.

Replacing an older machine with a water efficient model will mean massive water savings in your home.

Front-loading washing machines typically use about 50% less water, 35% less detergent, and 30% less energy than equivalent-sized top-loading washing machines, making them the most cost-effective and water-efficient option.

Just because an item has been worn it doesn’t mean it requires washing. If your clothing has no visible stains and passes the ‘smell test’ used by parents around the globe, place it back in your drawer to wear another day. This will not only save water in the laundry but also extend the life of your clothing and keep colours vibrant.

  • To save water and energy, always run your washing machine on a full load.
  • Washing in cold water saves energy and may not compromise the quality of the wash.
  • Look for washing machines that have a four or more star rating (WELS label) and choose a water efficient front loading washing machine if possible.
  • Use the economy settings on your washing machine. Reducing the wash to one rinse cycle rather than two will also save up to 100 litres of water per wash.
  • Adjust the water level to suit the size of the wash load - some new water efficient models will do this automatically.
  • If your machine has a sud-saver option use it when you have several loads to wash.
  • Pre-treat stains before loading into your machine.
