As well as registering your dog, all dogs must be microchipped within two months of being registered or prior to being released from the pound.
Microchipping means that your dog has a unique and permanent identification number. The number is stored on the National Dog Database, along with other information relating to your dog. This information can only be accessed by Dog Control Officers across New Zealand.
As a dog owner you are legally required to have your dog microchipped and provide this number to your local council. Often a vet will microchip your dog and record it on their database. You need to ensure we have also been advised of the number. If we know your dog’s microchip number and we find your dog, in most instances we can notify you immediately.
Update - April 2024
The Pound is currently undergoing an upgrade to improve its facilities, making it safer for visitors and staff and providing a better environment for the dogs.
During this time, there will be disruptions to our microchipping service, with this service only being available during the pound opening hours – Monday to Friday, 2.30pm to 4.30pm. Please give us a call on 07 577 7000 to make an appointment.
You can check your dog’s microchip number at any vet clinic, and the SPCA.
Dogs registered as working dogs, which are used solely or principally for herding or driving stock, are exempt from microchipping. No other working dog category is exempt. Working dogs must still be registered annually like any other dog.
Note: A microchip does not have any batteries. It only responds when a microchip reader is waved over the back of your dog and allows us to be able to quickly contact the owner. A microchip does not enable anyone to track your dog.
