Bike parking provision for new buildings

When designing a new commercial development, consider how you can provide appropriate multi-modal options.

We have provided guidance to consider when planning your development below.

All new commercial buildings should provide:

  • End-of-trip facilities for staff, including secure undercover cycle/scooter parking, showers and lockers (and consider other recommended facilities outlined below); and
  • Undercover bike parking for visitors/customers within close proximity (25 metres) to a building’s main entrance.

Bike parking

It is recommended that bike/scooter parking is provided at a ratio of 10-20% of staff. For example, the new building at 90 Devonport Road, which will house up to 700 Tauranga City Council staff, has approximately 110 bike parks (a 14% ratio).

Bike parking should be inclusive and provide space for larger bikes (cargo bikes, trikes). Bicycle Parking dimensions and design requirements are noted in the City Plan.

Showers

To support staff who use active travel modes or who wish to exercise during their lunch break, it is recommended that:

  • For small commercial buildings (up to 10 staff), at least one shower is provided as a minimum.
  • For medium size buildings (11-50 staff), one shower per 10 staff.
  • For larger buildings (>50 staff), it is recommended that showers are provided at a rate of 5-10 per 100 staff (i.e. 5-10%).

Lockers

  • Individual lockers for staff should be provided at a rate of one per every bike/scooter park.
  • Flexible use lockers (within the office), which can be used on a more casual basis, are also recommended for people who may exercise during their lunch break.

Other recommended facilities

Other facilities that architects should consider in the design of end-of-trip facilities for staff include:

  • Powerpoints for e-bike/e-scooter charging (located within easy reach of some of the bike parking spaces).
  • A bike pump (with universal valve head) and potentially a repair station.
  • An ironing board and iron.
  • Hair dryers.
  • A towel/clothes drying room or clothesline to hang wet clothes and towels.
  • A towel service for staff.

Short-term/visitor bike parking

Architects should consider providing adequate sheltered areas in close proximity to the main entrance for short term visitor parking.

A 6metre by 2.5metre space (the size of a standard parking space) can cater for up to 10 bikes. Simple Sheffield stands can be easily and cheaply installed to provide this and provide security for bikes to be locked against.

The number of short term/visitor bike parks will depend on expected visitors to the site and the location.
