When to put your bins out

Your kerbside rubbish, recycling, glass and food scraps collection day depends on which suburb you live in.

Summer holiday period kerbside collections 2025/26

If your kerbside bins are usually collected on a Thursday, or Friday, your collection day will be one day later than usual for two weeks, from Thursday, 25 December to Saturday, 3 January. This is to give our kerbside collections team a well-deserved break on Christmas and New Year’s Day. To those households impacted by this change, please place all bins at the kerbside before 7am the day following your regular collection day during this period.

If you have extra glass, recycling or rubbish that won’t fit into your bins on collection day, you can either save it for future collections or take it to the Te Maunga Transfer Station (as bins with lids that won’t close, or overfilled glass recycling bins, can’t be collected). Extra recycling or glass can be dropped at the transfer station free of charge, and you can drop up to four 75L bags of rubbish for $6.00 each bag (maximum weight of 10kg per bag). Anything over the four bags will revert to standard charges based on weight. Thanks for another year of sending less to landfill!

Why is my property showing as not subscribed or not listed on the tool?

If your property is not returning a result, it might be for one of the following reasons:

  • You are a garden waste customer and subscribed after 28 June 2021
  • You are part of a multiple unit dwelling, instead of having a collection day, you’ll take your waste and recycling to a bin bay
  • Your property is not serviceable
  • You do not reside in Tauranga City

Please refer to the calendar (downloadable below) and the sticker on your bin if your collections are not displaying. Contact us at kerbside@tauranga.govt.nz if you are unsure of when to put your bins out.

Public holiday service changes

We’re collecting bins on all public holidays, excluding Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. If these public holidays fall on a weekday, all collections remaining for that week will roll to the next day. For example, if Christmas day falls on a Monday, collections for the entire week will roll to the next day.

Collection days and weeks from May 2024

Each household will be given a collection day and week (either ‘Week 1’ or ‘Week 2’) which can be found on the side of your bins. Food scraps will be collected every week and the rest of the collections will operate across a fortnightly cycle. You will never have to put all bins out at once, one week you’ll put out your rubbish and food scraps bin, and the next week you’ll put out your recycling, glass and food scraps bins. Place your bins at your kerbside by 7am on your collection day for collection.

Garden waste service

If you have signed up for the optional garden waste service, you will also find your collection day along with your frequency (either fortnightly: 2W, or 4-weekly: 4W) and week (either ‘Week 1’ or ‘Week 2’) on the side of your new bin.
