Durham Street project update - Friday, 21 June 2019

We would like to remind everyone that there will be watermain shutdowns on the nights of Sunday 23 and Monday 24 June. The shutdowns will happen on Elizabeth Street, from Devonport Road to Cameron Road, to allow the new watermains in Durham Street to be connected to the Elizabeth Street main.

We would like to share a message we received from a member of the community who was extremely grateful for assistance provided to her mother.

"Could you please convey our thanks and appreciation to the orange-vested Fulton Hogan personnel who were working on the Durham Street paving project on Thursday 13th June at around 1.30pm.

Because of parking issues, my close to 100 year old mother was obliged to navigate the available pedestrian areas between Spring Street and Elizabeth Street. As you can imagine, this was problematic with a walker on the uneven surfaces. However, several members of your staff, both male and female, went out of their way to help negotiate the curbs and difficult spots.

This was very much appreciated by us both. I do not have names but would like to sincerely thank all concerned.

- Shelley"

Please find recent updates to the project below.

Durham Street

All of the concrete work on the west side of Durham Street has now been completed. This means there is now a concrete footpath from Elizabeth Street to Durham Street. There is still some tidy up work underway at the Rock Shop corner but we are happy to celebrate this milestone.

Asphalt will be laid from the University of Waikato to Smiths Cycles next week and traffic will be moved onto this to allow more excavation on the east side to Beaurepaires.

Work will begin next week on boxing and pouring the concrete footpath and roadway near the parking building on the east side.

Spring Street and Durham Street Intersections

Street lights have been installed on the intersection. The next stage is for them to be activated.

Good progress was made this week with asphalt and kerbing between the new and existing pavements and cobblestone.

Durham Lane

Work on the accessway from Spring Street to the University of Waikato has been held up this past week while the revised design is completed. The lane remains closed to traffic and pedestrians while excavation and construction is underway.

Durham Lane, from Durham Street to the Bongard Centre, remains closed to traffic while the Durham Street footpath and parking areas are concreted and cured.

Please contact Keith Campbell our Stakeholder Manager if you have any concerns or questions regarding the construction.
