Construction is underway on the final stage of the Southern Pipeline – the harbour crossing between Memorial Park and Matapihi. Large steel pipes will start being driven into the harbour at Matapihi this week. These are outer sleeves that will protect the soft sand layers of the harbour once the pipeline is being drilled. It will take about 10 days to drive in the outer pipes at Matapihi, then another 10 days to do the same at Memorial Park. To see how the drilling process will work, see this short video below.
The Harbour Crossing is the final stage of the Southern Pipeline construction. It will connect the wastewater network between Memorial Park and Matapihi, through a pipeline that will run deep beneath the harbour bed, at a depth of up to 35m. Construction of this section began in February and will be completed by December.
