Durham Street project update - Friday, 19 October 2018

Durham Street

The water main upgrade continues along Durham Street and we are now past the University of Waikato Campus and moving down the street on schedule.

Part of our work on Durham Street has involved installing a new duct for power cables. To ensure we do not strike any of the existing services while working underground, we are using a technique called Hydrovac – this is a method of using water to remove material rather than machinery. This is a slower process but is more reliable to ensure that no existing services are damaged and our team are kept safe.

Durham Lane

The first retaining wall is nearing completion with the panels now in place (pictured). Backfilling is now underway, and excavation has begun on the second wall near the Craigs building. We will be drilling and installing the posts next week, and there may be some minor delays in traffic movement along the lane.

Spring Street and Durham Street Intersection

Just when we thought all our major hurdles were over on this intersection (having negotiated some very difficult underground services), it seems the deeper we dig the softer the ground…and this is not good news. The soft ground will need to be carefully strengthened before we can lay our new road. This is a real disappointment for the team, but we are soldiering on and getting some new designs created and continuing with our footpath preparation. We will keep you updated.

Traffic management remains the same as per map below (The yellow block areas are where Durham Lane works are underway):
