Wastewater overflow warning for Pilot Bay

People are being warned to stay out of the water in Pilot Bay as a precaution, due to a wastewater overflow that occurred in Mount Maunganui at 8pm last night, Sunday 15 November 2020.

Signage has been placed along the beach and in the water to warn the community of the potential risk.

The wastewater blockage, caused by a build-up of fat and wipes, resulted in sewage overflowing into the stormwater network and consequently the harbour.

We have cleared the blockage and cleaned the overflow site. Water quality samples will be taken this morning to check bacteria levels in the water as a precaution.

The warning signs will be removed from the beach once the tests confirm the water poses no health risk. Until then, people are urged to stay out of the water.
