Tauranga City Council’s four Infrastructure Acceleration Fund (IAF) applications have all been selected to progress to a formal Request for Proposal process, with detailed funding applications to be lodged with Kāinga Ora Homes and Communities by 17 December.
Commission Chair Anne Tolley says selection to participate in the formal funding process recognises the city’s significant growth and the urgent need to address housing availability and affordability issues.
“Tauranga is growing quickly and it’s essential that we initiate projects that will increase our housing supply, while ensuring that the homes being built align with people’s needs and ability to pay,” she says. “All of the proposals we will be submitting are designed to accommodate growth, both within our existing footprint and in new housing areas.
“In light of the Government’s recent announcement about facilitating housing intensification in high-growth cities, partnership approaches such as the IAF are imperative to enable councils to provide the supporting infrastructure required by growing inner-city populations.”
She noted that Tauranga’s IAF applications (set out in the table below) were for total funding of $185.8 million and that nationally, applications exceed the available funding capacity. “That will essentially make this a contestable funding process, but it is encouraging that all of our projects have been selected to progress to the next stage.”
