Kulim Park to re-open to vehicles on 22 December

Kulim Park in Ōtūmoetai is temporarily closed to vehicles until 22 December, including the weekend of 18-19 December, while the finishing touches are added to the park upgrade before Christmas.

The park has been closed to vehicles since Wednesday 8 December and was originally expected to open to vehicles again this weekend, but this week’s wet weather has held up work on the parking areas. The park is still open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Tauranga City Council is carrying out an extensive upgrade to the park, including a new playground, parking layout and shared pathway. Most of the construction will be completed by Christmas, including the new playground.

Director of Spaces and Places, Paul Dunphy, says contractors have been working tirelessly to complete the improvements before Christmas but due to delays in material supplies and some very wet weather they won’t be able to finish everything this year.

“We’ll have to come back in January to finish sections of the shared pathway and finishing touches. This work will only take a few weeks to complete. The gardens will be planted when the dry season is over later in the new year.

“The good news is that the playground and the parking areas will be finished and ready to use over the holiday period.”

The car park at the Tauranga Yacht Club at the Kulim Avenue end of the park will be open for limited parking.
