Tauranga City Council are introducing new speed limit signage at five schools across Tauranga: Tauranga Intermediate, Aquinas College, Golden Sands School, Taumata School and Matua School.
The new variable electronic speed signs are LED panels and will display 40 inside a red circle and will be activated at peak times before and after school. These will be accompanied by fluorescent yellow metal School Zone signs.
The 40km/h speed limit will provide a safer environment near schools during times of peak activity. The electronic signs will also allow a lower speed limit of 30km/h to be displayed in the future if new legislation is passed by government, as expected.
The 40km/h variable speed limit is the maximum legal speed that you can travel when the signs are operating on the road under good conditions. The speed limit will revert to 50km/h when the signs are not operating.
