The Kaumatua forum provides an opportunity for Kuia and Koroua of Tauranga Moana to raise issues and concerns with the Mayor, Chief Executive and staff (Rangatira ki te Rangatira).
The other purpose of the Kaumatua Forum is to offer an opportunity for Kuia and Koroua of Tauranga Moana to be updated on Council projects that have been identified as significant to them such as the Tauranga Heritage Collection. The Kaumatua Forum also provides a reference forum to Council’s Takawaenga Maori Unit and to the Cultural Heritage Manager of the Tauranga Heritage Collection on tikanga and kawa relating to nga iwi me nga hapu o Tauranga Moana.
Membership is open to any person of kaumatua status in and around Tauranga Moana.

Meeting format and frequency
The meetings are generally chaired by the Takawaenga Maori Unit and supported by the Cultural Heritage Manager of the Tauranga Heritage Collection.
Meetings are held three times a year or when required.
