Director for Bay Venues Limited

Event date: 12/05/2025 8:00 am - 23/05/2025 5:00 pm Export event

Do you have a passion to create exceptional venue experiences for the Bay of Plenty region?

If so, a board member role at Bay Venues Limited may be your perfect opportunity.

Bay Venues Limited is Tauranga City Council’s largest council-controlled organisation and plays a major role in creating value for Tauranga and enriching the lives of its people, now and into the future.

Bay Venues’ purpose is connecting our community through exceptional experiences by providing the best venues for Tauranga.

Bay Venues manages and operates more than 20 venues, providing a high standard of sport, recreation, event and exhibition facilities, programmes and services to the community. These include Mercury Baypark, Mount Hot Pools, University of Waikato Adams High Performance Centre and Baywave, and a number of community centres, halls and pools.

The Board of Directors is responsible for developing and delivering the strategic and financial management of the company, as well as overseeing the management of Bay Venues’ assets and resources.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a director to join the board from 1 July 2025, whose skills and experience complement those of the current board. Diversity of thinking is valued, and the current board will typically have the following attributes:

  • Experience in project management, being able to deliver project on time, to budget and specs.
  • Experience of venue and facility management including asset maintenance and renewal at a strategic level.
  • Understanding of balancing a commercial return on investment and ensuring community outcomes are prioritised.
  • Experience in a community leadership role, or links with and understanding of the Tauranga community and its agencies would be of value in this role, as would an ability to build and maintain genuine relationships within the community.
  • Strong governance experience is essential, as is a commitment to the health, safety and wellbeing of the organisation and the community.
  • Experience in local government is preferred and understanding of public service ethos.  Strong financial background, preferably at a governance or strategic advisory level, particularly in the areas of finance, audit and risk.

If you believe you have the skills to make a difference and a real contribution to the Board of Bay Venues, your interest in the position is welcomed.

Bay Venues is a council-controlled organisation of Tauranga City Council, which operate autonomously but in a political environment, with a requirement to meet the expectations of both its shareholders and its community in accordance with an agreed Statement of Intent.

Meetings are held in Tauranga. A small remuneration is provided and will be confirmed prior to appointment. Successful applicants will be appointed for a three-year term. While applicants are not required to live in Tauranga, the ability to build and maintain relationships within the Bay of Plenty community needs to be demonstrated.
