Showerhead exchange

People in New Zealand spend an average of eight minutes each day in the shower and traditional style showerheads use between 15 and 20 litres of water per minute.

Installing a water efficient showerhead and cutting total shower time to 5 minutes not only conserves water, but cuts water and heating bills too.

Want to start saving water and money now? Take part in our free showerhead exchange programme, where Tauranga residents can swap an old inefficient showerhead with a flow rate greater than 12 litres per minute for a brand new water-efficient model that uses just nine litres per minute.

Showerhead Installation

Follow these step by step instructions to install your new water-efficient showerhead.

Criteria

We will be offering 250 free showerheads to Tauranga residents that meet all the criteria. Eligible participants may receive a maximum of two showerheads per property.

1. You either:

a. own the property where the showerhead will be installed, or
b. reside in a property and an owner of the property provides written approval for the showerhead exchange. Please email approval to waterline@tauranga.govt.nz.

2. The property where the showerhead will be installed is in Tauranga

The showerhead exchange programme is only available to properties based within Tauranga City Council boundaries.

3. Your property is on mains pressure – not low pressure

Not sure what pressure system you have?

  • Have a look for a sticker on your hot water cylinder – there should be one that says either mains pressure or low pressure.
  • How old is your house? If it’s pre 1990 you’re probably on low pressure.
  • Is there a copper pipe sticking out of your roof above the cylinder? If so, you’re probably on low pressure (this usually gets removed if you switch to mains pressure).
  • Turn your hot water on for few seconds, then turn it off. Repeat. If your cold water has more pressure than the hot, then you’re on a low-pressure water system.

4. You currently have a screw-in showerhead

You need to be able to remove your old showerhead by unscrewing it and bringing it in to a local TCC Service Centre to swap for a new water efficient showerhead.

Your screw in shower head will look like this:

5. Your shower flow rate needs to be between 12 litres and 20 litres per minute

By submitting an application to participate in the showerhead exchange trial, you are deemed to have read, understood and accepted the following terms and conditions:

To be eligible to participate in the trial you must meet the following criteria:

  • You either:
    a. own and reside in a property (“Property”) within the Tauranga City Council (“TCC”) area; or
    b. reside in a Property within the TCC area and an owner of the Property provides written approval for the showerhead exchange.
  • You are not an employee or agent of TCC or any of its related corporations or of any agencies associated with the trial, and you are not a spouse or de facto partner of an employee or agent of TCC;
  • Your Property is on mains water pressure;
  • There are no outstanding arrears for water rates on the Property;
  • Your existing water flow rate for your existing showerhead is between 12 litres/min and 20 litres/min;
  • Your existing shower must be compatible with the showerhead to be provided by TCC.

If you meet the above criteria, TCC does not guarantee your application will be accepted. Applications are subject to availability and will be approved on a first-in, first-served basis at TCC’s sole discretion. There are a total of 250 showerheads available. Applications will no longer be accepted once all showerheads have been allocated to eligible participants.

Eligible participants will receive a maximum of two showerheads per Property.

If your application is successful, you will receive a showerhead and installation pack in return for your existing showerhead.

You agree to install the new showerhead correctly. One 9 litre/min aerator fitting is included. This is designed to reduce the water use of the showerhead.

TCC will keep your old showerhead for 30 days from the day you swap your showerhead. You can return the new showerhead in its packaging for your old showerhead at any time within the 30-day period. After the 30 days, TCC will dispose of your old showerhead.

By taking part in this trial, you agree to participate in a short survey which will be emailed to you approximately two weeks after you collect your new water-efficient showerhead. We are keen to receive feedback on the application process, your new showerhead and what your new water flow rate is.

To the extent permitted by law, TCC will not be liable for any claims for loss, damage or injury whatsoever or for any physical or mental injury suffered by any applicant as a result of or in connection with this trial.

TCC reserves the right to amend or change these terms and conditions at any time at its sole discretion, including extending, postponing or cancelling the trial.

These terms and conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of New Zealand and shall be subject to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of New Zealand courts.
