Apartments and short-term accommodation

Resources and information on kerbside rubbish and recycling for your apartment, village, or holiday accommodation.

Multi-unit dwellings bins

Communal recycling

Communal recycling

This bin is for recycling only, you can bring your recyclables from your apartment/home to this bin in a bag or box and empty the accepted contents into the bin.

Recycling should not be tied in a bag as this will contaminate the bin and could mean that it is not collected by the driver.

Please flatten cardboard boxes.

Communal glass

Communal glass

These bins are for glass bottles and jars only, you can bring your glass from your apartment/home to these bins in a bag or box and empty the accepted content into the correct glass bin. There is a bin for each colour of glass; brown, clear, and green, glass needs to be colour sorted to ensure good quality recycling.

Glass should not be tied in a bag or inside a cardboard box as this will contaminate the bin and could mean that it is not collected by the driver.

Communal food

Communal food

This bin is for food scraps only, you can bring your food scraps from your apartment/home to this bin in a container and empty the accepted content into the bin. If using a plain brown paper bag to transport food, the paper bag can go into the bin too.

All compostable type bags are not accepted in Tauranga’s food scraps collections as they can take too long to break down and contaminate the compost process.

Communal rubbish

Communal rubbish

The rubbish bin is for anything that can’t be reused or recycled. You can use a kitchen tidy/plastic bag to bring waste to this bin.

If your apartment complex or village is not participating in the food scraps collection service, food scraps will also need to be placed into this bin.

Apartments with a rubbish chute

If your apartment has a rubbish chute, this can cause problems with residents not wanting to separate their waste before throwing it away. Sorting waste can save space in the rubbish bin and helps divert valuable resources from landfill.

Download this poster to go next to your rubbish chutes, we recommend one poster next to each rubbish chute within the building.

Short-term holiday guests in multi-unit dwellings

Our service in Tauranga can be a little bit different from what others in New Zealand and overseas might be used to at home. Make sure if you are having guests stay with you or you are renting out your apartment over the holiday season that you communicate how to use our systems.

If you live in an apartment complex or run a hotel style accommodation complex which is eligible for the council kerbside services, you can download the following guides to include in your visitors book or pin them to the wall. Both the versions have a box where you can fill in where you would like guests to take their waste.
