Council meets to discuss the proposed rates-funded kerbside waste collections and facilities

The mayor and councillors met today to discuss the recommendations from staff around the proposed rates-funded kerbside waste collections, management of the transfer stations, litter, public place bins, and illegal dumping.

Almost 70% of Tauranga’s household waste sent to landfill could be recycled or composted instead. The rates-funded kerbside waste collections have been proposed to help reduce this. Other councils that have introduced similar services have seen a reduction in household waste going to landfill as a result. The proposed collections would also result in fewer trucks on the street on collection day, and fewer car trips to the transfer station (particularly for recycling).

The proposed collections were first considered in 2016 as part of the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan consultation and were also included in the Long Term Plan 2018-28 consultation. As a result of the community feedback received, Council resolved to introduce the collections, subject to a procurement process to investigate and finalise the details (such as collection frequencies, what items will be collected, size and types of bins, assisted services etc.).

We are now near the end of this procurement process and will be able to provide more information on the final decision/s made by the mayor and councillors once any final commercial negotiations that may need to be undertaken under the procurement process are complete.
