Winter Nights | Winter Lights, presented by Tauranga City Council, is the city's winter light celebration hosted at Tauranga’s waterfront on Friday, 14 and Saturday, 15 July. This free, all-ages event will run over two nights, featuring interactive light installations by Angus Muir, a magical projection of light onto a cascading wall of water, food stalls and more.
Gareth Wallis, Council’s Manager: City Events is looking forward to the luminous winter celebration.
“It’s so easy to curl up in front of the fire and hibernate in winter. But Tauranga’s Winter Nights | Winter Lights is designed to pull us out of our pyjamas, grab our woolly hats and embrace the colder months by coming together to celebrate,” Mr Wallis said.
“Winter Nights | Winter Lights will create a visually spectacular event right in the middle of the school holidays so you can keep the kids up a little bit later and enjoy the shows.”
“The event is family friendly and designed to inspire parents and kids alike. Combining art and technology, people of all ages will find something that captures their spirit and fills their minds with imagination and wonder.”
Tauranga’s residents can look forward to exclusive light shows and an installation titled “Extrude” from Auckland based artist Angus Muir Design. Extrude is an impressive lighting installation designed to be viewed both at a distance and up close. 16 translucent posts – each standing 10 metres high – are illuminated on all sides and respond to those who come close.
Laser shows on the cascading wall of water will run every half hour (from 6pm – 9.30pm) throughout both nights to give everyone – from families and youngsters to young at hearts – the chance to attend the event when it suits them best. People can come into town at any time they wish between 6pm and 9.30pm, grab a bite from The Little Big Market’s ‘Winter Bites’ food stalls or from one of the many bars and restaurants in the CBD and enjoy the light shows.
Tauranga City and Bay of Plenty Regional Councils have teamed up to provide extended Bayhopper bus hours for the event. Visit www.baybus.co.nz for details.
