Congratulations for a marathon effort!

Congratulations to the Tauranga International Marathon who diverted a huge 94% of event waste away from landfill last Saturday. This great result was achieved with support from the Tauranga’s City Council’s Resource Wise Events programme, delivered by Beyond the Bin.

Pre-event planning to minimise waste, highly visible bins for separating waste, and waste educators on site to help event attendees to do the right thing all contributed to the impressive reduction in waste.

Kim Renshaw, founder of Beyond the Bin said that the Tauranga International Marathon did an extraordinary job for their inaugural event.

“They were so committed to minimizing waste which was excellent.

“For example, they agreed to change the aid station cups to compostable ones – which made a huge impact as these cups usually make up a large part of the event’s waste stream,” Ms Renshaw said.

Tauranga City Council’s Acting Resource Recovery and Waste Manager, Cathy Davidson, said she was really pleased with the Tauranga International Marathon’s waste management on Saturday.

“The 94% diversion of waste from landfill was an awesome result!

“Our Resource Wise Events Programme is designed to help event management teams reduce the environmental impacts of their events. We’d like to think that being part of this programme helped them achieve such a great result,” she said.
