Moturiki and Mauao base track remain closed

Moturiki (Leisure Island) and the Mauao base track will remain closed until at least 7.00am on Monday, 24 May 2021.

The closures were put in place around 3.00pm on Sunday afternoon due to dangerous sea swells which breached the Mauao base track and crossed over the sand bar at the back of Moturiki. It was too dark after high tide this evening to assess whether the tracks can be reopened safely.

There are warning signs in place advising of the closures.

The next high tide is at 4.35am on Monday, 24 May. Council’s Team Leader, Parks and Environment, Warren Aitken, says staff and contractors will reassess the closures when the waves stop coming over the tracks and it is safe to assess. This will likely be around 7.00am.

Tracks to the summit of Mauao remain open. People using these tracks should exercise caution as there is a high wind warning currently in place.
