Road closures - 16 December 2021

Cameron Road

The streetscape upgrade between Wharf Street and Elizabeth Street intersection is underway. Temporary traffic management is in place and there is currently a southbound lane closure on Cameron Road between Wharf Street and 184 Cameron Road (Tumble Laundromat), and closures on Spring Street and Wharf Street.

Work on the wastewater upgrade between Elizabeth Street and First Avenue with pipe bursting of the wastewater line down First Avenue has been completed. Work on the lateral connections (those across the road to the businesses in First Avenue) will be completed in the New Year. Temporary traffic management has been removed allowing access to both lanes. The right-hand turn on the eastern and western side from Cameron Road is now open.

Work continues on the eastern side of Cameron Road between Sixth and Ninth Avenue, and Twelfth and Fourteenth Avenue. Vehicle traffic will be reduced to one lane on the eastern side in the areas where work is taking place. Temporary traffic management will be in place, however access for all residents, businesses and retail will be maintained.

The work sites will be shut down for Christmas from 24 December 2021 until 5 January 2022.

Repairs to SH2 Takitimu Drive (under the Waihi Road/Eleventh Avenue overbridge) by Waka Kotahi

People who travel along State Highway 2 Takitimu Drive regularly will know there are a few bumps under the Waihi Road / 11th Ave overbridge, near Judea. Starting Wednesday 5 January 2022 Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency are going to rebuild this section. The works involve removing a considerable amount of the road and filling it with new material and replacing with structural asphalt, as well as upgrading the drainage.

To do the rebuild work, they need to close the 500-metre section down to two lanes. This will add time to people's holiday travel plans, especially those people wanting to get to and from the beach. And the alternative routes will both have significant worksites active from 10 January; a weekend closure of SH2 at Bay Link from Saturday 15 to 5.30am Monday 17 January, as well as the worksites along Cameron Road. The aim is to have the work completed by Auckland Anniversary weekend, weather permitting.

Plan your journey, pack water and snacks for the drive and check the Waka Kotahi Journey Planner at journeys.nzta.govt.nz/traffic.

Links Avenue cul-de-sac trial

The cul-de-sac trial on Links Avenue finishes on 17 December 2021.

We appreciate your support over the past five weeks as we trialed a cul-de-sac on Links Avenue with the objective of keeping children safe. Being a trial, the cul-de-sac was presented in a very temporary form with some tweaks to signage to improve understanding over the weeks.

We understand engagement with the community looked very different as we adjusted to COVID-19 restrictions by undertaking a ‘consult by trial’ approach. We are grateful for the time many of you have taken to provide us with your thoughts and appreciate the patience and support you have shown.

15th Avenue maintenance work

Essential maintenance work on 15th Avenue, between Grace Road and Burrows Street continues this week. Works are scheduled for completion mid December, weather permitting.

Traffic management will be in place and weekday work will finish at 3pm to avoid peak hour traffic.

During the weekends a short detour will be in place for eastbound traffic, along Grace Road, Fourteenth Avenue and Burrows Street.

To avoid delays or inconvenience please plan your journey, adjust your travel times or use an alternative route.

Elizabeth Street upgrade

The Elizabeth Street upgrade continues to work on a number of fronts around the Thirty Eight Elizabeth development (Farmers). Works on First Avenue and Devonport Road are due to be completed shortly. Works to create the linear park outside Thirty Eight Elizabeth, and to upgrade Mareanui laneway between Thirty Eight Elizabeth and the Elizabeth Street car parking building will be completed in stages as areas are made available. The temporary roundabout at the Elizabeth Street/Devonport Road intersection has now been removed and the traffic lights have been reinstated.

  • Elizabeth Street west bound lane closure: there is an extended lane closure on the west bound traffic lane (heading towards Takitimu Drive between Devonport Road and Grey Street roundabout) until approximately May 2022. The traffic lane closure is to enable streetscape works and Farmers construction to occur simultaneously. Businesses and footpaths and accessways are accessible during the works. On-street carparking will be unavailable. Over the holiday period, from Wednesday 22 December to Monday 10 January, most of the temporary traffic management equipment including cones and fences will be removed. Over this period Elizabeth Street will be open to traffic going both ways.

Other temporary road and lane closures on Elizabeth Street and surrounding streets are as follows:

  • Elizabeth Street road closure on 18 December: Elizabeth Street between Grey Street and Devonport Road will be closed in both directions on Saturday 18 December from 5am until 6pm. This is to allow a crane lift required for the Farmers development. Businesses and footpaths and accessways will remain accessible during the works.
  • Grey Street lane closure until 22 December: the Grey Street southbound lane into Elizabeth Street will be closed intermittently until Wednesday 22 December. This is  to enable the construction of landscaped kerb buildouts at the proposed pedestrian crossing between Macpac and Smiths Sports Shoes, and stormwater works between Event Cinemas and Smiths Sports Shoes. Footpath access will be maintained throughout, as well as access to driveways. This work was delayed due to the weather conditions this week.

Totara Street safety upgrade

In order to minimise disruption over the Christmas/New Year period, all major works will be finishing up on Friday 17 December. The last overnight lane diversion will be on Thursday 16 December from 7pm to 7am on Friday morning (see map below).

Minor activities will continue away from the road from 20 to 22 December during the day but this should not affect traffic. After this period the area will be tidied up and made safe for over the holiday period. Work will resume on Tuesday 11 January 2022.
