Event road closures 2025-2026

Tauranga has plenty of amazing events on offer. To ensure these events are delivered efficiently and safely for participants, the public, residents and businesses, the following road closures will be in place:

Cambridge Road lane closure - January 2026

Project construction is ongoing at multiple sites on SH29 as part of the Tauriko Enabling Works, a project led by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi in partnership with Tauranga City Council. Read about the project at nzta.govt.nz/tauriko-enabling-works.

In January we will be removing the temporary sheet piles from the new retaining wall along Cambridge Road. To complete this work, a short section of the northbound lane on Cambridge Road, from the SH29 intersection to 579 Cambridge Road, will be closed from Saturday 3 January until Monday 2 February, with no entry into Cambridge Road from SH29. Crews will be working 7 days a week, with extended shifts and night work.

What to expect

  • 24/7 Cambridge Road northbound lane closure and detour for Bethlehem-bound traffic: All Bethlehem-bound vehicles from SH29 to use alternative sign-posted routes via SH29 Takitimu Drive Toll Road (adds approx. 15 minutes, toll applies) or SH29A and Cameron Road (adds approx. 22 minutes, free route).
  • Cambridge Road southbound lane: Remain opens.
  • Cambridge Road to SH29: Right-turn bay closure. Kaimai Range/Hamilton-bound traffic must turn left onto SH29, then use the SH29/SH36 roundabout to change direction.
  • Temporary speed limits: A 60km/h speed limit will apply on SH29 on all approaches to the intersection, and a 30km/h speed limit on the section of Cambridge Road around the work site.
  • Resident access: Access for Cambridge Road residents from SH29 will be via the detours. Vehicles exiting driveways within the closure must turn left onto SH29 and follow the detour.

Pacific Apartments settlement reached

Tauranga City Council has released details of an out-of-court agreement which settled historical defective building claims at an apartment building in Mount Maunganui.

The Pacific Apartments building at 8 Maunganui Road was constructed in 2006. Like many other New Zealand buildings constructed around that time, it was later alleged to have problems with weather-tightness, as well as structural and passive fire issues.

The Council and other parties settled with the owners for a confidential sum on December 4, avoiding the need for a ten-week trial, which had been scheduled to proceed in 2022.

In the interests of public transparency, the Council has obtained agreement from other parties to provide details of its portion of the payout.

Chief Executive Marty Grenfell today confirmed that the Council’s portion of the settlement payment is $29,435,000. 

Mr Grenfell said councils around the country have had to face similar legacy liabilities relating to building deficiencies. Because of their regulatory role as building consent authorities, and ability to fund such liabilities, councils were often left to pay a disproportionate share of claims which should be jointly-funded by developers, constructors or professional service providers.

“In the council’s last annual report, funds were earmarked for weathertight building claims,” he said. “We’ve opted to resolve this matter through mediation, which provides certainty to apartment owners who have been dealing with this stressful situation for a number of years.”

Mr Grenfell said the Council’s regulatory approach had fundamentally changed since the early-2000s. “In 2005, consenting and inspection activities were outsourced. Those activities are now a core part of our inhouse regulatory function.”

The Pacific Apartments building was constructed by head contractor Watts and Hughes Construction Ltd. It was developed by Asia Pacific Management Ltd and Lincon Pacific Ltd (removed from the Companies Register).  The architect was Avery Team Architects Limited; and the project manager was MPM Projects (2003) Limited.
