Financial acumen

Mahé brings experience in accounting and financial management to the governance table, having worked in investment and advisory roles for both Hobson Wealth and Forsyth Barr Limited. He has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from University of Auckland in accounting and commercial law. He also completed a Graduate Diploma of Commerce in information technology. He worked in an accounting firm early in his career and is an ACA with Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand (CAANZ).

Sporting achievements

Mahé is a two-time Olympic Champion in 2012 and 2016 in the single scull and won the World Championship five times, so he knows what it takes to set and achieve ambitious goals on the global stage.

Mahé was Flag Bearer and Team Captain of the New Zealand Olympic Team at the 2008 Games. He was the Supreme Halberg Award Winner in 2006 and winner of the Sportsman of the Year at the Halberg Awards 2006, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2016. He was inducted as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (M.N.Z.M) in 2009.

Since retiring from professional sport, Mahé has been a mentor and leader.  He has been a strong advocate for elite athletes as a co-Chair of the Athletes Co-operative, which has sought to improve terms and conditions of elite athletes with High Performance Sport New Zealand.

A long-standing connection to Tauranga

Mahé was raised in Tauranga, attending Tauranga Primary School, Tauranga Intermediate and Tauranga Boys' College before heading to Auckland for his sixth form and then direct to University in Auckland. He took up the sport of rowing at university – he went on to have a very successful 22-year career in the sport.

His grandfather, the late Sir Robert Owens, served as Mayor of Tauranga (1968-1977) and Mount Maunganui (1971-1974).

He is married to Juliette and has three children.

Mahé welcomes the opportunity to be involved in the community and for people to share their views.

A new chapter for Gate Pā begins!

A blessing ceremony yesterday marked the beginning of construction for the new Gate Pā Community Centre – a project aimed at fostering strong connections and building an inclusive, vibrant community space.

The 500m² facility will provide a safe, welcoming, and flexible space for residents, complemented by outdoor areas designed to meet community needs now, and into the future. More than just a building, the centre will serve as a hub where people can gather, feel safe, build friendships, and learn new skills.

Doug Barnes, Chair of the Gate Pā Community Centre Trust, thanked the local Iwi for blessing the property and acknowledged the historical significance of Gate Pā. He said there had been a lot of people involved in bringing the project to this stage, and thanked Tauranga City Council for their support.

The Trust – made up of Doug, Rachel Pinn and Ron Scott – will govern the centre on behalf of Gate Pā residents and oversee its management. Their appointment followed a formal selection process.

Rachel says the project reflects the aspirations of the community.

“I’m honoured to be involved in developing a community centre that reflects the hopes and needs of Gate Pā. While my journey here began elsewhere, I’ve found real purpose in helping shape inclusive, transparent systems that serve the people of this place. It’s a privilege to contribute to something that’s bigger than any one origin story,” explains Rachel.

Councillor Rod Taylor says the centre is a significant step forward for Gate Pā.

“This project is about creating a space that truly belongs to the community – a place where everyone feels welcome and supported. It’s exciting to see the level of engagement and collaboration that has gone into shaping this centre. It will be a cornerstone for connection and wellbeing in Gate Pā," says Rod.

The location for the centre is adjacent to Anzac Park, on land made available by Accessible Properties to support community outcomes. Its central position ensures easy access to schools, early childhood centres, churches, health facilities, and parks.

Tania Wilson, General Manager Tenancy Services for Accessible Properties (part of the IHC Group), says working with Tauranga City Council to bring the Gate Pā Community Centre to life has been a fantastic experience.

“It’s part of our kaupapa to support the communities our houses are in, and the centre will provide a space that brings people together and helps them to thrive,” says Tania.

Community input has been central to the project, with mana whenua, residents, and local organisations actively involved in co-design workshops to influence the location, design, governance model, and services offered.

Construction will officially begin following the blessing ceremony held on 26 November, marking an important milestone for the project. The community centre will be open late 2026.
