Matariki is a time of renewal and celebration - a time for communities to come together.
Traditionally, the rise of Matariki was a sign to ensure food crops had been harvested and the storehouses were well-stocked for the coming year. Across Aotearoa New Zealand, we now recognise Matariki with a public holiday, this year on Friday 20 June.
Different iwi and rohe (regions) celebrate Matariki at different times. This year, the Matariki Te Tauranga o ngā Waka event series takes place from 28 May to 22 June 2025.
Matariki Te Tauranga o ngā Waka encompasses Tauranga Moana and the Western Bay of Plenty, from Waiororo (near Athenree) in the north, to Ōtamarākau (near Maketu) in the south. Throughout Matariki, the region will come alive with events including live performances, exhibitions, workshops, family events, and more.
Matariki is an opportunity to reflect, celebrate our history and make plans for our future. In doing so, we acknowledge our traditions, language and culture, which together give us a sense of who we are.
We’ll be sharing more information about the Matariki Te Tauranga o ngā Waka event series very soon.
