Transfer stations

We have two transfer stations in Tauranga. Te Maunga Transfer Station is open to the public and commercial operators. Maleme Street Transfer Station closed to the public on 2 August 2021, and no longer accepts garden waste or recycling waste streams.

Easter weekend hours at Te Maunga Transfer Station

Te Maunga Transfer Station will be closed on Good Friday and will be open from 9am – 5pm on Saturday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday.

Te Maunga Transfer Station safety improvement trials

During March, Enviro NZ is trialling safety improvements around loaders at the rubbish drop-off pit. Trials will take place on Saturdays and Sundays. During this time, you may be asked to wait before unloading your rubbish while the loader clears the pit.

Te Maunga Transfer Station

Te Maunga Transfer Station is open 7 days a week Monday - Friday 7:30am-5pm, Saturday/Sunday and Public Holidays 9:00am-5pm.

Garden waste must be brought to the transfer stations in separate loads to general waste. Recycling is free for most materials and some larger items can be recycled for a fee. The transfer stations don’t accept hazardous waste (except small quantities of household hazardous waste), medical waste or liquid wastes.

It can get busy at transfer stations, so for the best experience we recommend visiting on a weekday or on weekends between 9am and 10:30am or after 3:00pm.

Fees are set by Enviro NZ who lease and operate the transfer stations.

Site safety

Covered footwear must be worn at all times, children under the age of 15 must remain in the vehicle at all times and there is a 20 km/hr speed limit at the station. Smoking, photography and cell phones are not permitted.

Maleme Street Transfer Station closed to the public

Maleme Street Transfer Station closed to the public on 2 August 2021, after our new kerbside collection service started. The transfer station is now open to commercial waste companies and account holders only.

The low-lying site is prone to flooding, which led to an abatement notice being issued in 2017 due to the unacceptable level of contaminants, mostly from vehicles, entering stormwater drains.

Prior to closing to the public, our efforts to reduce the contamination were successful and upgrading the site is not financially viable and there is no certainty it would solve the issues. Since closing to the public, contaminant levels have significantly reduced and the abatement notice has been lifted.
