Together we can send less construction waste to landfill by changing the way we plan, design, build and dispose.
What is construction waste? And what is the benefit of reducing it?
Nearly one quarter of all waste processed at Tauranga Transfer Stations is made up of waste from construction and demolition (23%) and there’s also an additional large amount of construction and demolition waste that ends up in privately managed clean fill sites around the wider Bay of Plenty area. Materials like concrete, wood, and steel dominate this waste stream. Sending these materials to landfill isn’t the only option. We have local facilities that can accept this material for recycling instead.
How we're supporting local construction companies wanting to reduce their waste
We’ve heard from those in our local building and construction industry that it can be a challenge reducing the amount of construction waste that ends up in landfill, while also keeping up with the demands of one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing regions. We’ve also heard our support is needed in this space. That’s why we’re developing a new programme to provide local construction companies with the tools needed to significantly reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfill, while still making commercial sense.

How can you help?
If you’re interested in reducing your construction waste ending up in landfill, taking one small step (like recycling old concrete from a job) can be a great way to start.
If you’re further along the journey and would like to do even more, we’re looking for local construction companies to trial our new Resource Wise for Construction and Demolition programme and provide feedback, so we can make sure it will be valuable to our local construction community. If you’re interested in taking part in the pilot, please reach out.
