Parks and walkways: where to walk in Tauranga

Due to recent storm damage resulting in landslides and vegatation blocking walkways, a small number of walkways are currently closed while safety work continues.

Thank you for your understanding as we work to restore access. There are still many beautiful tracks and parks open across Tauranga. See the latest status updates below and discover some great places to explore this summer.

Track status:

Closed (as of 4 February 2026):

  • Johnson Reserve - Victory Street entrance
The Victory Street entrance has three large fallen trees blocking the track. Arborcare is scheduled to be on-site to undertake tree clearance, which is hoped to be completed by the end of the week.
The rest of Johnson Reserve is open.
  • Waikareao West - Novella Place
This area requires further geotechnical assessment and a detailed remediation plan before the slip and debris can be safely cleared.

Open (as of 4 February 2026):

  • Waikareao North, Daisy Hardwick, Maxwells to Goods Road
There is one fenced-off slip area, but the remainder is fully accessible.
  • College Place
All main access points are open. There is an orange mesh fence near the cliff front reserve.
  • Gordon Carmichael Reserve (Graham Place)
Minor mesh fencing is in place, but public access is available around it.
  • Kopurererua Valley
    All tracks are open.
  • 199 Papamoa Beach Road access
    Open.
  • Banks Avenue beach access
    Open.
  • Sherwood Vale
Mesh fencing is in place with access around it.
  • Yatton Park
All open, except the active tree-work area.

While some of our popular parks and walkways still remain closed, it’s a chance to explore some of Tauranga’s other incredible walking destinations.

Here are a few gems that offer stunning scenery, varied terrain, and plenty of space to roam:

Kopurererua Valley (K Valley)
A regional favourite and important ecological corridor for the city, K Valley offers wide shared pathways, wetland boardwalks, open natural green spaces and connections all the way from Tauriko to the city centre. Perfect for walking, cycling, running, bird watching and connecting with nature.

McLaren Falls Park
Only a short drive from the city, McLaren Falls Park provides a huge network of lakeside tracks, short nature walks, picnic spots and breathtaking scenery. It’s ideal for a peaceful weekend wander or a full-day adventure.

Te Rere o Ōmanawa / Ōmanawa Falls
Ōmanawa Falls offers a short, beautifully built forest walk with raised boardwalks, stair sections and multiple viewing platforms overlooking the 35-metre waterfall.

Yatton Park
Known for its large exotic trees, beautiful gardens and serene trails, Yatton Park is great for families, gentle walks, or anyone looking to enjoy shade and greenery close to home. Only the current tree-works area is restricted.

Gordon Carmichael Reserve
A beautiful wetland reserve with flat, easy paths that suit all ages and fitness levels. Expect birdlife, bridges, and calm viewing spots along the way.

Fergusson Park to Kulim Park coastal path
A flat, easy harbourside route ideal for walking, running or cycling. Enjoy breezes off the water, open spaces and safe accessible paths suitable for all ages.

Marine Parade coastal pathway
Located between Mount Hopukiore (Mount Drury) and Oceanbeach Road, the three-kilometre pathway curves alongside the beach and provides many opportunities for locals and visitors to embrace this stunning section of coast, whether you’re taking an evening stroll, having a beachside picnic or enjoying the views over the moana (ocean) and nearby motu (islands).
