Durham Street project update - Friday, 22 February 2019

Orientation week for the University of Waikato starts next week and we are happy to announce that we have completed the pedestrian access from Spring Street to the entrance of the university building.

We expect an influx of students around the site in the upcoming weeks. We would like to remind everyone to use care as you travel in the vicinity and obey the speed restrictions.

Spring Street and Durham Street intersections

The traffic travelling on Durham Street through the Durham Street and Spring Street intersection have successfully shifted onto the new concrete pavement. This means we have been able to start work excavating for the new pavement on the other side of the intersection.

The cobblestone paving has started this week on the footpath area. Tactile pavers are being installed for the visually impaired.  Work will continue next week placing the cobblestones in the pedestrian areas.

Durham Street

Work is underway installing stormwater pipes near Elizabeth Street to the end of Durham Street. We have discovered some archaeological items such as evidence of Maori-era storage pits in our excavations. These discoveries have delayed our progress on this activity.

We are planning for the excavation in front of the retail shops to begin in a week’s time. We intend to excavate and prepare the footpath area after hours allowing for continued access to the businesses in the area. When this work starts, there will be no parking available on Durham Street. Tauranga City Council have arranged for short-term parking (30mins) on Elizabeth Street for customers of the businesses on Durham Street.

Durham Lane

The southern end of Durham Lane was asphalted last night (21 February) allowing for ready access between Bongard Centre and the University of Waikato. The rain prevented completion of the asphalt and there is still some work to do to complete the southern section to the Cameron road access.
