The Never Happens? Happens community event is this Saturday. Please join us at the first Papamoa community evacuation event and the official opening of the purpose-built tsunami high ground at Gordon Spratt Reserve, Papamoa on Saturday, 7 April from 3.30pm.
People are being encouraged to download a postcard to use on the day to be in to win great prizes. Event-goers can get their postcard stamped by volunteers as they walk or cycle along the routes, and drop the postcard into the prize draw box at the event.
There will be music and entertainment along the routes, as well as emergency services information and displays, sports activities, a live music stage, food vendors and prizes at the event.
Over the past six years, your council has been working on ways to keep you safe in the event of a tsunami. We have identified safe areas, provided evacuation maps, created evacuation routes, and constructed the first purpose-built tsunami high ground in Australasia.
Now that we have safe areas and clearly marked routes in place, we want people to try them out and practice their evacuation plan.
And remember: if you feel an earthquake that is Long or Strong: Get Gone. Don’t wait for an official warning. Evacuate immediately on foot, to avoid traffic jams, to your nearest safe area. All the evacuation routes are on our website.
Please make a plan to join us this Saturday, 7 April.
