We will be progressing our wastewater works this weekend where a section of Elizabeth Street will close from 3pm on Saturday, 8 September to 6am on Monday, 10 September. This is final stage of works to upgrade the wastewater system.
The timing of this work on Elizabeth Street will minimise the disruption in the city during the working week. A large VMS Board, advertising and communications will raise awareness of the closure. There will also be road cones in place around the Elizabeth Street and Cameron Road intersection to re-direct traffic.

Upgrading the wastewater system
We are currently completing the replacement of the wastewater pipe, which is the deepest pipe underground. This pipe needs to be replaced across Elizabeth Street to the manhole in the middle of the roundabout. Because of the depth and the unknown existing services, it was decided to complete the work over the quietest period – which is Saturday pm through to Monday am. Once this connection is complete there will be about another 2 weeks work on the wastewater pipe to complete that section of work. Following the weekend work, we will be able to start clearing the section of road to remove as much machinery/fencing as possible.
Unplanned services
We have two sites around the middle of the street where we have come across unknown services. You will see these smaller sites have been fenced off and we are working cooperatively with different agencies to re-align the existing services so that new services can be installed.
Spring Street – Durham Street Intersection
The work around Spring street/ Durham Street intersection is involving the upgrading of other services – water, stormwater, power, gas, telecom. This work is very slow because of the myriad of unknown services that need to be maintained. Once that work is complete, the surfacing work will begin which is an aggregate basecourse base and high strength architectural concrete surface.
Durham Street Laneway
On Monday, 17 September we will begin our work to upgrade the laneway and improve access to the new University of Waikato City Centre Campus. This is going to be a fantastic new fine grain space for people to walk through and access the city. Our first work will involve excavation and building a retaining wall. We are working directly with the landowners who are impacted by this work. If you are interested in the future use of our city centre laneways, come down and visit the pop-up laneway installation next week on Grey Street to get a real feel for the potential of laneways in our city centre.

As you can see, we have a number of elements to this project, and appreciate your understanding this week while the road layout has been changing. Please contact Keith Campbell our Stakeholder Manager if you have any concerns or questions.
