Good afternoon,
See below this week’s update on the project.
New work hours
- Starting from Sunday 13th November, we are going to be increasing our work hours to increase momentum on some key aspects of the project. We will be working extended hours during the week, and over weekends.
- For approximately 3 weeks, we will be installing a water main on the Trustpower side of the road, to do this with minimal impact we will need to close the road to through traffic in the evenings from 6pm. The road will be re-opened by 6am in the mornings.
Durham Street
- Next week we will be testing and connecting our water main upgrade on the west side of the road. Work will then start on installing the new line on the east side down near the Spring St intersection.
- We are nearing completion of the power ducting and gas renewal works, and we will be working this weekend to minimise impact on businesses.
- The first rain garden structure is in place (pictured below) we will continue to set up the next structure. All our rain gardens will be prepared and then planted next year.

Durham Lane
Work continues along Durham Lane, at the south end we have called in archaeologist this week to investigate the soil. Here is a little summary below from Sian Keith, our Archaeologist Expert.
On Durham Lane we have found a historic occupation site including evidence for buildings and the rubbish the occupants left behind. Alcohol Bottles, medicine bottles, ceramic plates and cups, shells and faunal remains for domestic food waste. These were found in post holes (from buildings), old rubbish pits and an old drainage ditch that ran through the site. The latter feature had the highest concentration of material with a number of items still relatively intact. The items and features likely represent occupation in the latter half of the 19th century.
Once the items have been cleaned and analysed in the lab we can get a better picture of the assemblage and its contribution to our knowledge about 19th century Tauranga. The finds appear to be standard material expected from the later half 19th century (alcohol bottles, willow patterned plates, Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce bottle). Some bottles also appeared to have partial labels still intact.

Spring Street and Durham Street Intersection
This week we have begun pouring concrete for the new intersection upgrade, work will continue over the coming weeks and you will start to see the new style of our streetscape upgrade with new paving patterns. We will be completing half of the intersection, allowing it to cure for a month before we can then move traffic over it and begin work on the other side.

Traffic management remains the same as per map below (Note Durham Street will be closed to through traffic for night works only):
