We make Tauranga better by funding events that deliver positive community outcomes and economic benefits to the city.
Events contribute to Tauranga’s social, cultural and economic outcomes, helping to make our city a great place to live, work, learn, visit and play.
Community outcomes
Events must contribute towards achieving all three of the following community outcomes to some degree, relevant to the size, scale, and nature of the event. Our funding decisions are heavily weighted towards these outcomes and we recommend that all applicants take the time to meaningfully address these areas in their application.
An inclusive city
Tauranga is a city that celebrates our past, is connected in our present and invested in our future. Where people of all ages, beliefs, abilities and backgrounds are included and feel safe, connected and healthy.
We support event organisers that take positive steps towards encouraging social inclusiveness and accessibility for our diverse communities. Event organisers should take special consideration to creating opportunities that:
- create a sense of civic pride and ensure a higher standard of living for all
- bring people together to share memorable experiences
- encourage local talent to emerge and thrive
- engage youth and encourage participation
- celebrate diversity and inclusion
- make provisions for the vulnerable or disadvantaged communities
- reduce barriers to participation for all
A city that values, protects and enhances our environment
We require event organisers to emphasise the importance of protecting and enhancing our natural environment when planning events.
Key environmental considerations that must be prioritised by organisers at every event are:
- transport planning
- sound environmental operations and works to promote green initiatives
- respect the environment and promote protection of key assets
- resource recovery and waste minimisation, including waste generated by the event and its spectators/participants
- noise management
A city that supports education and business
Tauranga is a city that fosters both educational advancement and thriving business opportunities, generating employment and cultivating a skilled workforce. We encourage event organisers to emphasise the educational value their events bring to our community, along with the economic benefits the event will provide our local businesses. This includes:
- Supporting local businesses, whether through employment, contracts, attracting visitors and/or increasing foot traffic.
- Provide jobs and/or upskilling opportunities to the community through paid and/or volunteer work.
- Events that are driven by tangata whenua, promoting and educating attendees on Tikanga Māori (Māori customs and values), and raising awareness of significant historical events for Tauranga Moana Māori.
