Trustees for Tourism Bay of Plenty

Event date: 12/05/2025 8:00 am - 23/05/2025 5:00 pm Export event

Do you have a passion for the coastal Bay of Plenty and growing the region’s visitor economy in a sustainable and regenerative way?

If so, a board member role at Tourism Bay of Plenty may be your perfect opportunity.

Tourism Bay of Plenty takes a lead role in enabling sustainable growth of the visitor economy in the coastal Bay of Plenty in ways that benefit the whole community.

Tourism Bay of Plenty’s purpose is to promote the economic welfare and development of the Western Bay region and its community through destination marketing, destination management and other related activities which impact on the region as a visitor destination.

The Board of Trustees is responsible for the direction of this organisation including developing and overseeing Tourism Bay of Plenty’s Visitor Economy Strategy and monitoring financial performance and achievement of key initiatives and objectives.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for two trustees to join the board from 1 July 2025, whose skills and experience complement those of the current board. Diversity of thinking is valued, and the current board will typically have the following attributes:

  • Experience in tourism with strong tourism industry knowledge and networks.
  • Well-connected locally and across the Bay of Plenty region with key partners and stakeholders.
  • Strong local iwi connections and a sound understanding of the cultural history of New Zealand and an appreciation of Tauranga Moana Tangata Whenua.
  • Strong communications, digital and technology experience at a governance or strategic advisory level.
  • Strong customer experience/insights/marketing experience at a governance or strategic advisory level.
  • Legal expertise in the tourism and event sectors.
  • Strong governance experience is essential, as is a commitment to the health, safety and wellbeing of the organisation and the community.
  • Experience in local government is preferred and understanding of public service ethos.

If you believe you have the skills to make a difference and a real contribution to the Board of Tourism Bay of Plenty, your interest in the position is welcomed.

Tourism Bay of Plenty is a council-controlled organisation of Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council, which operate autonomously but in a political environment, with a requirement to meet the expectations of both its shareholders and its community in accordance with an agreed Statement of Intent.

Meetings are held in Tauranga. A small remuneration is provided and will be confirmed prior to appointment. Successful applicants will be appointed for a three-year term. While applicants are not required to live in Tauranga, the ability to build and maintain relationships within the Bay of Plenty community needs to be demonstrated.
