Garden waste

Add garden waste to your kerbside collections.

Currently, 16% of household waste sent to landfill is garden waste. We'd like to change that, so we're providing a new optional service that collects garden waste from your kerbside, processes it locally, and gives it a second, more useful life as compost instead. All for less than $5 a collection. Adding garden waste to your kerbside collections means you'll send even less to landfill.

Garden waste collections are available for residential properties only. The garden waste bins are 240L and you have the option of 4-weekly or fortnightly collections.

Households that add garden waste to their kerbside collections by 15 May 2021 will receive their garden waste bin before collections begin on 1 July 2021 and be charged $60 for the 4-weekly collections, or $95 for the fortnightly collections in their 2021/2022 rates invoice for the service. See our Garden Waste Terms and Conditions and Privacy Statement.

Please note that only ratepayers (or those authorised by a ratepayer) can sign up for the service and you will need to have your Customer Number and Valuation Number handy (found on your property or water rates invoice), in order to complete the sign-up process. The Garden Waste Sign-Up form hasn’t been built to work with Internet Explorer as Microsoft will stop supporting Internet Explorer from August 2021. Therefore, please use an alternative browser such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge to sign up instead.

Your questions answered

You have the choice of fortnightly collections (26 a year) or 4-weekly collections (13 a year).

Tenants can ask their landlord or property manager to sign up for garden waste collections on their behalf.

Property managers will need to seek permission from the landlord to sign up to garden waste collections on behalf of the tenant, as an additional annual charge will be added onto the property’s rates ($60 for 4-weekly collections, or $95 for fortnightly collections in the 2021/22 rates year).

If you’d like to have the garden waste collection service for the rates year 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022 you’ll need to sign up for garden waste collections before 15 May 2021. If you’d like to have your garden waste bin delivered at the same time as your new rubbish, recycling and food scraps bins, you’ll need to sign up before 28 February 2021.

Once you sign up, you will be charged $60 for 4-weekly collections, or $95 for fortnightly collections for the period 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022 in your rates invoice that you’ll receive in August 2021.

If you cancel your garden waste collections before 30 June in any year, you will not be charged the annual charge in the rates invoice for the following rates year of 1 July – 30 June. For example, if you cancel your garden waste service by 30 June 2022, you will not be charged for the service in your 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023 rates invoice. . If you cancel after 30 of June in any year, you’ll still need to pay the full annual charge to cover the service for the following rates year.

Collections will take place every two or four weeks on your collection day (depending on whether you have selected fortnightly or 4-weekly collections).

You will be given a collection calendar showing when your garden waste will be collected when you receive your new bin before the service starts on 1 July 2021.

If you change the frequency of your collections before 30 June in any year, the new frequency will apply, and be charged from 1 July that same year. If you change your collection frequency part way through the rates year (i.e. after 30 June), the change in frequency and charges on your annual rates invoice will not occur until the following rates year. For example, if you change your collection frequency on 2 July 2021, this won’t be applied until the following rates year 2022/23 beginning 1 July 2022.

If you sign up for garden waste collections before 28 Feb 2021, you will receive your new garden waste bin when the rest of your new rubbish, recycling and food scraps bins are delivered in the months leading up to the launch of the new service. If you sign up between 1 March and 15 May 2021, you will receive your garden waste bin separately from your other bins, but before collections begin on the 1 July 2021. We will notify you by email or mail (in the same way you receive your rates invoice) if you sign up between 1 March and 15 May 2021 to let you know the expected delivery date range for your garden waste bin.

You can take any additional garden waste to our transfer stations at Maleme Street or Te Maunga (next to Trustpower Arena).

Anyone who requires assistance taking their garden waste bin to and from the kerbside for collection due to a physical disability or ailment, will be able to apply for our free assisted service on our website closer to the time of the start of the service.

Yes, however only the body corporate or managers will be able to sign up for the service. If you live in an apartment or retirement village and want to sign up for a garden waste bin, please ask your body corporate or manager to contact us on 07 577 7000 to set up the service.

The garden waste will be turned into compost locally in Tauranga. The compost will be sold in bulk and bags to the agricultural, horticultural and landscape industries and bagged markets throughout New Zealand.

The new food scraps and garden waste collections will not accept compostable packaging. Composting facilities are not willing to accept compostable packaging in household food waste or garden waste collections due to the proven risk of non-compostable packaging being inadvertently included. This is further complicated by the inability to quickly and easily distinguish between compostable and non-compostable packaging. Also, there are different standards of compostable products, which require different methods of composting – therefore is not guaranteed to compost at the same rate as other materials.

If you have signed up for the garden waste collection and then cancel your service before 30 June in any year, you will not be charged the annual charge in the rates invoice for the following rates year of 1 July – 30 June. If you don’t cancel your garden waste service by this date, you will be automatically charged the annual fee for the service for the following rates year.

We cannot change the way your property is rated part way through rating year, so if you want to cancel this service you must do so by 30 June to avoid your property being charged this fee for the following rating year.

If you are selling your property, you will need to let the new owners know of their obligation to pay this fee in their rates until the following June.
