Tags and uncollected bins

Learn more about our education tags and why your bin wasn’t collected

Reasons for missed collections

Your bin may have been missed by our drivers, or we may have left your bin uncollected on purpose. If you can’t find the reason why your collection was missed below, contact us on +64 7 577 7000 or by emailing kerbside@tauranga.govt.nz

Please note collections are made by different drivers throughout the day, one bin might be collected in the morning and the other in the evening.

If you’ve put your bins out on the wrong day, they won’t be collected.

Next steps

Check your collection day. You’ll need to put your bin out on the right day or take your waste to the transfer station (fees may apply).

Overfilled bins are a health and safety hazard for our staff and community. The contents of overfilled bins can spill out onto the road or footpath when lifted by the truck.

Next steps

You’ll need to wait until next collection day or take your waste to the transfer station (fees may apply). Make sure you can close the lid of your bin and don’t fill your glass bin past the top line.

This means that your bin contained too many unaccepted items, your items were not washed and/or they contained food or liquid.

Next steps

You’ll need to wait until next collection day or take your waste to the transfer station (fees may apply). Check what goes in each bin and remember to wash your recycling.

Only Tauranga City Council bins will be collected.

Next steps

You will need to move your waste to the correct council bin or take your waste to the transfer station (fees may apply).

Your bin may have been blocked by cars or it might have been hidden.

Next steps

Contact us on +64 7 577 7000 or by emailing kerbside@tauranga.govt.nz to log a missed collection, and leave your bin at the kerb. Bins are usually collected within two working days; at peak times you might have to wait until a Saturday.

We may have missed your bin if it was left on a private road, you may need to take your bin to a public road instead.

Next steps

You’ll need to wait until next collection day or take your waste to the transfer station (fees may apply).

Your bin may not have been collected if it was damaged as lifting the bin may have been a health and safety hazard.

Next steps

Organise a replacement by contacting us on +64 7 577 7000 or by emailing kerbside@tauranga.govt.nz.

Education tags

We randomly check your recycling bins to help you recycle better and to ensure efficiency of the kerbside collection service. We’re using a green, orange and red tag system, green is a thumbs up – you’re doing great; orange is an almost perfect; and red is an oops! Sorry we can’t empty your bin.

What do I do if I received a red tag?

  1. Check your tag, we’ll tell you why you received it
  2. Rectify the issue and either save your waste until your next collection day or take to the transfer station (fees apply for rubbish and garden waste)
