Tauranga City Council’s Elected Members will consider introducing a Council-led glass-only kerbside collection service later this year, at an extraordinary Council meeting at 1.30pm tomorrow.
The proposal is in response to Waste Management New Zealand’s announcement that from 1 March this year, it would no longer accept mixed glass at its materials recovery facility in Te Maunga Lane, Mount Maunganui.
Waste Management’s decision affected all private waste service providers offering a recycling service to customers.
With no kerbside glass collection currently offered by private contractors, residents are limited to:
- disposing of glass as part of general waste
- taking glass to the Te Maunga Lane or Maleme Street transfer stations, or
- taking glass to one of the five glass deposit stations offered through Waste Management’s ‘Bins for Better Communities’ scheme
Council will consider whether to introduce an interim glass collection service; what the collection frequency rates could be; and whether to consult the community on such a service through the Long Term Plan 2018-2028.
