Durham Street Bus stops
As part of our works on Durham Street, we will be installing new bus stops to support the growth of Tauranga’s bus services.
There will be two new bus stops located on the Cameron Road side of Durham Street as per the artist’s impression and the sketch below.
These bus stops will be located at the southern end of Durham Street to ensure safety of pedestrians and vehicles, taking into account the level of activity outside the University and the Spring Street carpark.
What we know about the new bus services providing access to the University of Waikato campus:
- There are two bus stops in the Tauranga CBD which will cater specifically for University of Waikato students.
- These are situated on Durham Street and Grey Street with the Durham St stop requiring two bus bays to accommodate the new Bayhopper network.
- Ten services will use Durham Street – during peak times this will see 20 buses per hour using the stop.
- The following routes will go through the stop – City Link, Hospital Link, Routes 62, 55, 59, 40, 52x, 1 and Ōmokoroa and Katikati services.
- The Regional Council is planning for these Durham St stops to be “permanent”, but they would review this if, and when any future interchange location became known.
Things we consider when finding the most appropriate site for a bus stop include:
- How much room is available for the bus to safely approach and leave?
- How safe is it for people to get to the bus stop?
- Are there any pedestrian crossings nearby?
- How easy is it for people to get on and off the bus?
- How far away is it from other bus stops?
These bus stops will come into use at the completion of the Durham Street upgrade, which is planned for June 2019.
