Road safety - adults

The Travel Safe team work in the community to reduce accidents and improve road safety.

Young Driver Workshop

Free young driver workshops are aimed at road users aged between 16 and 24, who hold a current learner or restricted driver licence. Participants will leave with improved knowledge, confidence, and skills.

Each workshop includes:

  • A 60-minute one-on-one driving lesson with a certified instructor
  • Waka Kotahi NZTA roadworthy vehicle check (what to check to ensure your vehicle is safe and roadworthy)
  • Driver behaviour awareness (speed, impairment, restraints, distraction, and fatigue
  • Awareness session on sharing the road with heavy vehicles

Parents/caregivers are strongly encouraged to attend but it’s not compulsory. The four-hour workshops are held during school term holidays, usually between 9am and 1pm.

Drive has everything you need to prepare for your learner, restricted and full licence tests.

Parking behaviour

Drop off and pick up are busy times that pose a safety risk at the school gate. Travel Safe help schools to communicate things like parking time limits, drop off and pick up zones, parking over the kerb and other safety risks at the school gate. We deliver an in-school parking and safety programme named Peaceful Parker, and partner with council parking officers to do school visits when requested by schools or the community.

Blindzone Workshops

Blindzone workshops allow people to see the world from a truck driver’s point of view. Through a series of practical scenarios, participants will learn where to place themselves so they are visible to truck drivers and will leave with more awareness and confidence on the road.

Be Bright, Be Safe, Be Seen

This winter visibility programme reminds cyclists, walkers, runners, and scooter riders to have lights, bright clothing, and reflective gear if they are out and about during early mornings, evenings, and at other times of low light and poor visibility.

Whether commuting to work or school, being active for fun or fitness, or popping down to the local shops, people should take extra care and keep safe by being fully visible on roads and paths.

All cyclists are encouraged to wear high-visibility clothing and ensure their front light, rear light and rear red reflector are all working correctly and are clean.

Two aspiring directors ready to embark on their governance journey

Two talented individuals are set to begin an exciting chapter in their governance careers, joining the boards of Bay Venues Limited and Tourism Bay of Plenty through Tauranga City Council’s Aspiring Directors Programme.

Following a competitive recruitment process, Carey Manuel has been appointed as Bay Venues Limited’s board intern, and Michelle Redward as Tourism Bay of Plenty’s board intern. Both roles form part of the voluntary Council-Controlled Organisation (CCO) Aspiring Directors Programme, now in its fourth year.

This 12-month programme is designed to:

  • upskill emerging governance talent
  • increase diversity on CCO boards
  • build a strong pipeline of future directors for Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty region.

Mayor Mahé Drysdale says the programme is a powerful way to bring fresh perspectives to the board table while supporting aspiring directors on their governance journey.

“Building on last year’s success, we were thrilled by the calibre of the 26 applications received for this year’s cohort. Carey and Michelle stood out, and we’re delighted to welcome them into a supportive, learning-focused environment.

“This programme isn’t just about observation, it’s about immersion. Carey and Michelle will learn, contribute, and grow through active participation and mentorship. Their voices matter, and we’re excited to see the impact they’ll make.”

Bay Venues Limited Chair Simon Clarke says Carey impressed the selection panel with her deep understanding of Bay Venues and its relationship with Council.

“Carey came thoroughly prepared and demonstrated genuine insight into our organisation. Her motivation and knowledge stood out, and we’re excited to support her governance journey over the next 12 months.”

Of Ngāti Porou and Ngāti Kahungunu ki te Wairoa descent, Carey is passionate about community wellbeing and looks forward to contributing to Tauranga Moana’s future. Her experience and skillset in advancing Te Tiriti partnerships and system change with proven leadership across iwi, Māori, non-governmental organisation and private sectors, will be an asset to the Bay Venues Board.

“I’m excited to join the Bay Venues Board and learn from experienced directors. My goal is to listen, contribute thoughtfully, and bring my legal expertise, strategic leadership and community wellbeing experience to the table.”

Michelle Redward – Aspiring Director, Tourism Bay of Plenty

Tourism Bay of Plenty Chair Russ Browne says Michelle was the standout candidate, impressing the panel with her preparation and ambition.

“Michelle did her homework and showed a real hunger to succeed at the governance level. We’re looking forward to guiding her journey and seeing her fresh perspective in action.”

Michelle, of Samoan descent and raised in Hong Kong, brings over 25 years of expertise in the brand and design industry. She has extensive experience in brand development, storytelling, and driving commercial and creative results.

“I’m thrilled to be part of the Aspiring Directors Programme and the Tourism Bay of Plenty Board. This is an incredible opportunity to learn, contribute, and help shape Tauranga’s future while gaining invaluable governance experience.”
