In Tauranga,10% of people identify as LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual).
We’re committed to creating a diverse and inclusive city where all LGBTQIA people feel welcomed and a sense of belonging. We strive to ensure all groups are highly valued and recognised as an integral part of the community. The vision is that Tauranga is an LGBTQIA friendly city which enables people to live free of any discrimination and participate fully in all aspects of community and city life.
What is an LGBTQIA friendly city?
An LGBTQIA friendly city provides opportunities for the Rainbow community to fully participate in city life. As a council, we continue to work to better understand and respond to the needs of Rainbow communities and to foster an inclusive Tauranga where everyone belongs.
Vital Update Results 2023
Vital Update is a research project undertaken by Tauranga City Council, alongside the Acorn Foundation, TECT and BayTrust, every three years. It helps us understand community needs and aspirations right across Tauranga Moana, and data from the survey also helps inform Long-term and Annual Plans and other programmes.
Snapshots from the Rainbow community in the 2023 Vital Update results include:
- 33.2% own their own house compared to 60.8% overall in the city. The Rainbow community are far more likely to live with friends or have housemates.
- 56% believe that Tauranga is fairly to very welcoming.
- 61% said they felt lonely some or all the time compared to 36% overall.
- 47% said they had experienced mental health concerns compared to 17% overall.
