We have two transfer stations in Tauranga.
Te Maunga Transfer Station going cashless from 1 July
From 1 July 2026, Te Maunga Transfer Station will be cashless. All payments will need to be made using Eftpos or debit/credit cards.
Why are we going cashless?
People aren’t using cash much anymore. It requires secure facilities for storage and has safety implications for staff. Currently, only 4% of transactions at Te Maunga Transfer Station are made using cash, and this figure continues to decline each year.
We call them a transfer station instead of ‘the dump’ these days because these are sites where waste is sorted and transferred to specialised facilities in the region for reuse, recycling and repurposing. Waste that we can’t find a second life for will be transported to Waikato’s Hampton Down landfill.
Our goal in our Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2022-28 is to halve the amount of waste we send to landfill.
