Road closures

Roads need to be closed for various reasons, but mainly for maintenance, construction work, and events. You can sign up for the Weekly Bulletin for up to date road closure information.

Event road closures 2024-2025

Tauranga has plenty of amazing events on offer. To ensure these events are delivered efficiently and safely for participants, the public, residents and businesses, the following road closures will be in place:

Road closures - 5 August 2021

Road closures

Cameron Road

Stage one of the wastewater upgrade will see Fulton Hogan and Downer replacing the sewer pipes running along Cameron Road, as well as connecting properties streets. 

It is expected this work will take up to three months to complete with sections of Cameron Road reduced to Northbound traffic only. Visit Cameron Road for more information on this project.

Event traffic management 

Bunnings NPC 2021

There are four confirmed Bunnings NPC 2021 games at the Tauranga Domain this year on Sunday 8 August, Sunday 29 August, Saturday 4 September and Sunday 28 September.

There will be a southbound closure on Cameron Road between Brown Street and Wharf Street (including the existing lane closure already in place for the Cameron Road works) on game days and restricted parking on Cameron Road also. A stop go may be in place at times on game day for spectator safety.

 Southbound lane closure:

Sunday, 8 August from 12pm to 5pm

  • Cameron Road (between Brown Street and Wharf Street)

Parking restrictions

There will be restricted on Cameron Road. Access for mobility card holders is directly outside the venue on Cameron Road, with access via Cameron Road northbound lane only.

Bunnings Warehouse NPC lane closure.

Elizabeth Street road closure

There will be a full road closure of Elizabeth Street between Devonport Road and Grey Street is planned from Thursday, 5 August until midnight, Sunday 8 August. This road closure is to enable the deconstruction of the Hawkins Tower Crane 6 at 348 Elizabeth Street. 

Elizabeth Street westbound lane closure

Elizabeth Street west bound lane closure: west bound traffic lane (heading towards Takitimu Drive) between Devonport Road and Grey Street roundabout is closed for an extended period of time (until approximately March 2022). The lane closure is to enable streetscape works and Farmers construction to occur simultaneously. The lane (including the loading zone) between the old Coffee Club and Baywatch On Time will remain open. Businesses and footpaths are accessible during works. On-street carparking will be unavailable.

Elizabeth Street: works to upgrade water and wastewater pipes are almost complete on Elizabeth Street between The Strand and Cameron Road with some road closures at night between 8.30pm and 6am. These works are due for completion by the end of August. Bus routes servicing Grey Street have been rerouted down Durham Street. A bus stop is serviced outside 146 Durham Street to temporarily replace the bus stop outside 96 Grey Street. Signage for bus users is in place and latest service updates can be found at www.baybus.co.nz. Traffic lights at the Elizabeth Street/Devonport Road intersection have been replaced with a temporary roundabout until October 2021.

Lane between Elizabeth Street and First Avenue: works to lower the electrical cable and repave the First Avenue end of the laneway are underway. The First Avenue end of the lane will be closed to pedestrians until October. Pedestrian access to the Elizabeth Street car park building and the public toilets will remain open.  

First Avenue: works to construct pedestrian crossings along First Avenue, including Devonport Road, are underway. The road on First Avenue and Devonport Road will remain open.


Wharf closure

Salisbury Wharf

We’re doing maintenance works on Salisbury Wharf. Work is due for completion mid October. The wharf will be closed during this period.


Accessible changing facility at Mt Drury Reserve/Hopukiore

Following a submission by Tauranga Special School we are installing the city’s first accessible changing room.

This facility will support disabled people to visit the beach by having a changing facility that’s designed to meet their needs for greater levels of support. This facility will not be open to the general public.

Traffic report

City centre

  • 103 4th Avenue: there will be occasional lane closures in place for ongoing construction.
  • 2 Devonport Road: please take care when walking past the demolition site in this area. There will be footpath detours and some car park closures over the next few months.

Beyond the city centre

  • Matapihi rail crossing: safety improvement work continues at the rail crossing section of Matapihi Road. A reduced temporary speed limit is in place, please drive carefully through the work site. Weather permitting, works are expected to be completed early August 2021.
  • 359 Cameron Road: there will be occasional lane closures in place for ongoing construction.
  • Te Okuroa Drive, Papamoa: work on an extension of new road from the Stevenson Road roundabout will begin this week. The work is programmed to be completed by the end of October 2021.
  • Maranui Street/Oceanbeach Road: truck movements in and out of a construction site, please travel with caution around this area.
  • Adams Avenue/Marine Parade: occasional road closures over the next few months where a crane is working on the Oceanside Towers refurbishment. Car parking spaces outside the cafes will be limited during weekdays.
